Itsy Bitsy at The Square

Today’s children have no fear if Saturday’s events on Level 1 are anything to go by, hundreds of them were entertained and enthralled by the array of creatures on show at our Itsy Bitsy event which included reptiles, insects and the star of the show, Larry the snake! It seemed the Dads were hanging back looking nervous while the Mams and kids got up close and personal with all the snakes and spiders amongst others. As you can see from the pictures even the youngest of shoppers had a little play with the seven foot long python Larry. As well as being able to get up close and personal with the weird and wonderful wildlife, there was also face painting and balloon modeling for all the kids. Cheeky Monkey made an appearance to help entertain the kids. If you missed this event don’t forget to like us on Facebook and you will be the first to know about all our upcoming events here in the Centre.

Creative Campus: Vestige Exhibition

Creative Campus is a site-specific arts programme supporting NCAD students as emerging artists in the creation of art that engages with diverse audiences. The project also engages second level students from schools throughout South Dublin County as part of the NCAD Access programme.

Deansrath Community College, Firhouse Community College, Colaiste Brid Presentation School, Moyle Park College and Mount Seskin Community College were all involved in this exhibition along with artists Dzifa Hollwey, Fiona Campbell, Rob Carroll, Stephen Considine, Cameron Ridyard, Louis Deacy, Edel Fenelon, Kieran Bollard, Siobhan Fitzsimons and Emily Veale.Creative
Campus is managed and curated by artists Chloe Brenan and Siobhan Carroll. Throughout their three month artistic residency NCAD students have been addressing the themes of ‘materiality’ and ‘obsolescence’ in relation to South Dublin County’s industrial past. The students have considered the closures of the paper making mills that were once located along the rivers Dodder and Camac. The Creative Campus on Level 3 was abuzz on the evening of Friday April 26 for the opening reception of the space’s first full exhibition, Vestige. Fiona Campbell and Emily Veale, two of the young artists
involved, explained the stories behind many of the pieces on display, and how delighted they were at the overall success of the event. Fiona told us how enjoyable the whole process has been “It all came together quite quickly. It’s amazing how this empty space came filled up in just two weeks, because it was just so chaotic trying to place everything correctly but it all eventually fell into place”.
Emily added how they have been kept on their toes “We have been kept busy, especially with participating schools coming down with a number of students, overall we are all really happy with it and how it turned out”.

BUY A CUTE KNITTED EGG COSIE FOR A GREAT CAUSE!

A group of around 20 volunteer knitters have been knitting Easter chicks for a fundraising campaign for the Children’s Hospital in Tallaght. The Easter chicks cover an eggcup with a Cadbury chocolate egg inside, and they cost €4 euro each. These cute egg cosies will be on sale in The Square every Thursday, Friday and Saturday up to and including Easter weekend. If you wish to purchase them any other day, volunteers are selling them in the hospital itself.

Ann Carthy is the organizer of the campaign: “All proceeds are in aid of the Children Hospital, and we have been doing this for the past 10 years. Last year we raised €23.000, which all went to buy equipment for the Childrens Hospital. We were very pleased with that, I couldn’t believe it! “she said.
The chicks are knitted in an astounding variety of colours and designs so there’ll be one to suit every taste. As well as being sold in Tallaght Hospital, Fr Michael and Fr Pearce of the Sacred Parish, Clondalkin, have also agreed to sell some Easter chicks to aid the cause.
They are also running an Easter Egg Raffle. The prize is an Easter Hamper with a giant chocolate egg and a chocolate bunny inside. The hamper was kindly donated by Caffreys Irish Chocolate in Walkinstown.
